Do you really need a website to start selling?

Post by Jephthah »

A lot of people believe a business isn't real until it has a proper website: a nice design, its own domain, a clean checkout, the whole package. So they spend weeks tweaking colours and fonts before making a single sale.

Meanwhile, plenty of sellers are doing well through WhatsApp, Instagram, and plain word of mouth. No website, no fancy setup, just a phone, a decent product, and a willingness to message people directly.

A website does a lot of good things. It builds trust, it lets people find you on Google, and it works around the clock. But it also takes time, money, and attention, and all of that can go into building something before it's even confirmed that people want what's being sold.

One way to look at it is that a website is something you grow into, not something you need on day one. Start where customers already are, test the product, and build the website once it's clearly worth it.

Of course, there are two sides to this, and the community's experience matters more than any opinion.

• Did you start with a website, or did you sell without one first?
• What was your first sales channel, and how did it go?
• At what point did a website become worth it?
• Is there any kind of business where a website is a must from day one?

Let's hear your thoughts and experiences.

My passion for building websites began as a small child. I grew up using the oldest version of the Mac to play learning games as a kid. The world of color, imagination, and exploration excited my small mind with a world of infinite possibilities. As I got older, the sophistication of the games became greater, more in-depth, and more technical. The hard barriers between the game world and the real world began to blend and merge in real ways. As a lover of games, the world of technology, app building, websites, mobile games, augmented reality, and finally virtual reality created portals into other dimensions of thought and imagination.

So to answer your question, for me, how would I even know what a website is without a website?

Personally, I believe it’s better to start with what you have than to wait until everything is perfect. Social media and WhatsApp can help you get your first customers and understand what people want. Once sales become consistent, investing in a website makes more sense. The goal is to build a business that works, not just one that looks good online.
