Have you ever heard of someone earning a good salary but still struggling financially?
On the other hand, you may know someone who earns less but manages to save consistently, pay their bills, and gradually build assets.
This raises an important question: Is the real problem how much money we earn, or how we manage the money that comes into our hands?
Financial education involves understanding how to budget, save, manage debt, assess risk, and make informed decisions about investing and building wealth.
For example, someone who earns ₦300,000 monthly but spends ₦320,000 is moving into financial difficulty. Meanwhile, someone earning ₦150,000 who manages expenses carefully may be able to save a portion of their income.
Of course, income matters. A person earning too little to cover basic necessities cannot solve every financial problem through budgeting alone.
Nevertheless, understanding money can help people make better decisions with the resources available to them.
It can also help them recognise the difference between an asset that generates income, an expense that consumes money, and an investment that carries risk.
Financial education is not simply about becoming rich. It is also about avoiding unnecessary debt, preparing for emergencies, and having more control over future decisions.
