Relationship as a Threat
Healthy relationships support growth, but the wrong relationship, or one handled badly, can become a serious threat to a person's future, health, and peace of mind.
How a relationship can become a threat
Education and career: Too much time, money, and emotional energy on a partner can hurt grades, focus, and goals.
Finances: Spending to impress or keep a partner, or being financially controlled or exploited, can cause debt and dependence.
Mental health: Jealousy, constant quarrels, manipulation, and betrayal lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem.
Physical safety: Abusive relationships can involve violence, stalking, threats, or forced sex. Some end in injury or death.
Sexual health: Unprotected sex risks unplanned pregnancy and infections such as HIV and other STIs.
Reputation and privacy: Leaked private photos, blackmail, and gossip can cause lasting harm.
Cut-off from support: Controlling partners often isolate a person from family and friends.
Scams: Romance scams and "sugar" arrangements exploit emotional and financial vulnerability.
Warning signs of a harmful relationship
Constant control of your phone, clothes, or movements
Insults, threats, or humiliation
Pressure to do things you're uncomfortable with
Pushing you away from friends and family
Making you feel afraid, guilty, or worthless
How to protect yourself
Know your goals and don't sacrifice them for anyone.
Take time to know a person before committing.
Keep your own money, friends, and independence.
Set clear boundaries and respect your own limits.
Practise safe sex and protect your private information.
Leave early when red flags appear, and seek help from trusted people, counsellors, or the police if you feel unsafe.
Bottom line: A good relationship adds to your life. If it consistently brings fear, loss, or harm, it is a threat and it is right to walk away.
