Government leadership is the biggest single factor that can grow or kill business in Nigeria. You can have best product, but if government policy is against you, you will suffer. If policy favors you, even lazy business grows.
1. POLICY & EXCHANGE RATE - Dollar Controls Everything
Your electronics business depends on dollar. If government keeps dollar stable at 1,500, you can plan price. If leadership floats dollar and it jumps to 1,800 in one week, your 500k stock that you planned to buy suddenly becomes 600k. You lose. Same for import duty - CBN and Customs policy decides if your 20 chargers will be cleared for 20k or 80k at port. Good leadership keeps policy predictable for 6 months at least, bad leadership changes policy every month.
2. FUEL, LIGHT & INFRASTRUCTURE
After subsidy removal, fuel price is government decision. When fuel is 1,200 per liter in PH, your delivery cost doubles. Customers reduce buying. But if government fixes roads from rural farms to city, your foodstuff business moves faster and cheaper. If they give small business solar grants or improve NEPA to 12 hours in PH, your rechargeable fan business may drop but your cold room and POS business will grow. Government leadership decides which sector blows.
3. TAX, LEVY & MULTIPLE TAXATION
This is where many PH small businesses cry. In urban area: LGA levy, state task force, market union, NAFDAC if you package food. Good leadership harmonizes tax - you pay one ticket per year. Bad leadership allows 5 different groups to collect from same shop every month. In Rivers State, difference between one administration and another can be whether task force disturbs small shops or leaves them to grow for first 2 years.
4. SECURITY & RULE OF LAW
No business grows where there is no security. If leadership secures waterways and farms in rural Rivers (Etche, Ahoada), farmers farm more, food becomes cheap, your foodstuff business gets supply. If streets are secure in PH at night, night market and delivery business thrives. Also, if government protects contracts - if you supply goods to someone and police/court can help you recover money, you can give credit. If not, you only do cash and business stays small.
5. SUPPORT PROGRAMS & CORRUPTION
Good leadership brings real SME support: BOI loans at 9% interest, NIRSAL, Rivers State SME grant, free CAC registration for small business. Bad leadership has the programs on paper but money goes to their friends. Also import waivers - some big men get waiver for electronics, you pay full duty, they crash price and you can't compete.
So what should you do as small business owner?
You can't control government, but you can survive it:
- Don't fight policy, follow money: If government says CNG is new, start selling CNG accessories. If they say food security is priority, go into agro-processing.
- Keep business flexible: Don't put all 500k in one product that government can ban tomorrow. Mix.
- Stay legal: Register business name (35k), have TIN, keep receipts. When opportunity comes, you are ready.
- Join association: NASSI, Market Traders Association - government listens to group, not one person.
In short: Government leadership does not determine IF your business will grow, but it determines HOW FAST and HOW HARD you must work to grow it.
Good leadership makes business easy, bad leadership makes only tough and smart businesses survive - but those tough ones become very big later.
