*Finance Management - How to Control Your Money Before It Controls You*
Finance management is simply: *Know where money comes from, know where it goes, and tell it where to go next.*
Many people in Port Harcourt earn okay but still broke before month-end. It's not low income, it's poor management.
1. THE 4 RULES
*Rule 1: Track - You can't manage what you don't measure*
For 30 days, write every single thing you spend, even ₦200 pure water. You will be shocked where your money goes.
*Rule 2: Budget - Give every naira a job*
Use the simple *50/30/20 formula:*
- *50% Needs:* Rent, food, transport, data, light bill
- *30% Wants:* Eating out, clothes, shawarma, betting (reduce this)
- *20% Savings & Growth:* Savings, investment, emergency fund
If you earn ₦100k:
₦50k = Needs, ₦30k = Wants, ₦20k = Must save/invest first, not last.
*Rule 3: Save Before You Spend*
Don't save what is left after spending. Spend what is left after saving. As soon as salary enters, move your 20% to another account you don't touch easily.
*Rule 4: Avoid Money Leaks*
- Daily procrastination spending: "I will cook later" = you buy food outside 3x more expensive
- Dirty environment spending: Hospital bills, replacing spoilt food, rats eating things
- Impulse buying and betting
2. HOW TO START TODAY (Even With Small Income)
1. *Emergency Fund:* Save to reach at least 1 month of your expenses. This stops you from borrowing when bike spoils or sickness comes.
2. *No Zero Days:* Even if it's ₦500 a day, save something.
3. *Two Accounts:* One for spending (Access/PalmPay), one for saving (locked). Don't link your savings account to ATM easily.
4. *Debt Rule:* Never borrow for wants (clothes, phone, party). Only borrow for things that bring money back.
3. LINK TO WHAT WE DISCUSSED
- *Being Clean Saves Money:* Less hospital, less pest damage, less buying things twice.
- *Not Procrastinating Saves Money:* You do things early, avoid penalties and emergency costs.
> *Health is Wealth, but Wealth also needs management. If health gives you the energy to make money, finance management makes sure the money stays and grows.*
