How competitive business can be, and how to navigate it

Post by Peace »

Business competition for Nigeria now na WAR. No be small thing.

Especially for Owerri, everybody dey sell the same thing - POS, thrift, hair, data, food. You go open shop today, tomorrow person open the same thing beside you and sell cheaper.

How Competitive E Don Be Now:

1. Price war: Customer go tell you "for Mile 1 na ₦2k, why your own na ₦3k?" They no care about quality or transport.

2. Copy-copy: You start shawarma with special sauce, next week 3 people for your street start same thing.

3. Online competition: You dey sell for Rumuokoro, person dey sell same thing for Instagram and dey do free delivery to PH. Customer go order online instead.

4. Big shops vs small: Spar, Market Square fit sell cheaper than you because dem buy bulk.

So yes, e competitive die.

How to Navigate Am - No Be By Lowering Price:

1. Stop competing on price, compete on TRUST.
People no buy the cheapest, they buy from who they TRUST.
How to build trust:
- Show your face. Don't hide behind logo. "Na Emeka dey sell" is better than "Best Collections"
- Show behind the scenes - your market run, how you package
- Keep to promise. If you say delivery by 2pm, deliver by 2pm. Trust na money for this economy.

2. Find Your Small Corner (Niche).
No try to sell to everybody. Pick one group.

Instead of "I sell clothes" - try "I sell clothes for thick girls for PH, size 14-20, with delivery to office"
Instead of "I sell food" - try "I sell hot Afang soup for bachelors for GRA and D-Line every Sunday"

When you are specific, you have NO competition.

3. Add Service, Not Just Product.
Everybody dey sell the same product. Service is what makes you different.

- You sell thrift? Offer to wash and iron free.
- You sell foodstuff? Offer to deliver already peeled and cut.
- You do POS? Add small seat, pure water, and greet them with name.

Customer will pay extra ₦500 for how you make them feel.

4. Collaborate, Don't Hate.
Your competitor today can be your partner tomorrow.

- You sell hair, she sells makeup? Do joint live video.
- Both of una dey do POS? One person cover morning, one cover evening for same spot and share rent.
- Join WhatsApp groups for business owners for your area. When you get plenty order, give your competitor and take commission.

The street is big enough.

5. Be Consistent When Others Quit.
Most people quit after 2 months because e no blow. Competition filters out lazy people.

If you show up every day on your WhatsApp status, Facebook, shop - for 6 months straight - you will outlast 80% of your competitors. They go close, you remain.

My advice for you now:
Tell me which business you dey do, or wan start? I go tell you exactly how your competitors dey move and how you fit beat them WITHOUT lowering price.
