Why Betty added 4 items to her cart on Temu... and then walked away

Post by Tife »

Meet Betty. She spends 20 minutes scrolling, picking out cute items, and dropping them into her cart.

She gets all the way to the checkout screen… and then she closes the app.

That cart just sits there collecting dust for weeks.

We’ve all done what Betty did. But as business owners and marketers, why does this happen? Why do people go through all the trouble of picking items, only to abandon them at the last second?

It usually comes down to three small things that ruin the mood right before paying.

1. The Surprise Cost Jump

Betty was ready to pay $20. But at the final screen, hidden shipping fees, taxes, or extra service charges bumped it to $32.

The Fix: Show estimated shipping or full prices early. Surprise costs at the end kill the impulse to buy faster than anything else.

2. Too Many Steps to Just Pay

Betty had her card ready, but the site asked her to create a password, verify her email, fill out five address fields, and answer two survey questions.

The Fix: Let people checkout as a guest. Keep the forms short. The fewer buttons between "Add to Cart" and "Pay," the better.

3. Zero Reassurance at the End

Right when Betty was about to tap "Place Order," a tiny voice in her head asked: "What if this arrives broken? How hard is it to return this?" If the page doesn't answer that instantly, she backs out.

The Fix: Place a tiny line of text right under the pay button, like "Free 30-day returns" or "Delivered in 3-5 days." It calms buyer doubt instantly.

The Takeaway

Getting someone to add an item to their cart is only half the battle. If your checkout page feels confusing, expensive, or tedious, your customer becomes another Betty—leaving money sitting in a dusty cart.

Question for the group:

When you abandon a cart online, what is usually the main reason you walk away?
