TOPIC 1: JAPA SYNDROME - NIGERIA'S BRAIN DRAIN CRISIS
What is it?
Japa is Yoruba slang for "run away fast". It is mass emigration of skilled Nigerians.
*Current Situation (2025-2026 Data):*
- Only *55,000 doctors left for over 220 million Nigerians*. WHO says we need 1 doctor to 600 people, Nigeria has 1 to 4,000 or even 1 to 10,000.
- *20,966 health workers left in just 1 year* - including 3,919 doctors, 7,487 nurses.
- In last 5 years alone, *16,000 doctors emigrated*. Resident doctors fell from 15,000 in 2014 to just 8,000 in 2025.
- UK, Canada, US are top destinations. 4,691 Nigerian doctors moved to UK alone between 2023-2025. c4e330a75db60f0f
*Why Are They Leaving?*
1. Poor pay & delayed salaries
2. No equipment - doctors use torchlight for surgery
3. Overwork - 1 doctor to 10,000 patients
4. Insecurity and no work-life balance
5. Better pay abroad - UK pays 10x
*Effects on Nigeria:*
- Hospitals are empty, patients wait 12 hours
- Mental health crisis: 40 million Nigerians have mental issues but 85% have no care because psychiatrists have Japa'd
- We lose billions - government trains them, other countries benefit
- Those who remain burn out and also plan to Japa c4e3
*Solution:*
Pay doctors well, equip hospitals, create diaspora partnership where those abroad can train those at home.
