Is success in business 80% luck and 20% hard work?

Post by Jephthah »

Be honest, have you ever looked at a successful business and thought, "They just got lucky"? Maybe they were in the right place when demand exploded. Maybe a big customer happened to walk in. Maybe a post went viral and changed everything overnight.

And then you look at someone who works twelve-hour days, does everything right, and still barely gets by. It doesn't feel fair, and it makes you wonder how much of this game is actually in our hands.

The "luck" argument is stronger than most people like to admit. Timing matters. So does where you were born, who you know, how much money your family could lend you, and what the market looked like the year you started. Two people can work equally hard and end up in completely different places because of things neither of them controlled.

But the "hard work" side has a good answer too. Luck only helps if you're ready for it. A viral post means nothing if you can't deliver orders. A big customer walks away if the first experience is messy. Many people say luck shows up more often for those who keep showing up, keep trying, and stay in the game long enough for something to land.

Then there's the uncomfortable part. When someone succeeds, they tend to credit their own effort. When someone fails, they often blame bad luck. Neither is always true, and both can stop us from learning anything.

Maybe the real answer isn't a percentage. Maybe luck decides the opportunities, and hard work decides what you do with them.

So what's your take?

• Has luck played a big part in your business, good or bad?
• Have you worked hard and still seen things go nowhere? What happened?
• Can you create your own luck, or is that just something people say?
• If you had to put a number on it, what would your split be?

Tell us how you see it, even if it's an unpopular opinion.
