THE BEST SEASON FOR PLANTING AFRICAN STAR APPLE

Post by Egbunefu Faith »

The best season for planting African star apple (Agbalumo or Udara) in Nigeria is the rainy season, particularly between April and June.

1. Best Planting Period
April to June: This is an excellent period for planting because the soil has sufficient moisture to help the young tree establish its roots.
July to August: Planting is also possible, provided there is enough time for the seedlings to establish before the dry season.
November to March: This is generally less suitable for planting young seedlings without irrigation because the soil may become too dry.
2. How to Plant Star Apple
Get fresh seeds: Collect seeds from a healthy, ripe star apple fruit.
Prepare the soil: Choose fertile, well-drained soil.
Plant the seeds: Plant fresh seeds in a nursery bag or seedbed.
Water regularly: Keep the soil moist but avoid waterlogging.
Transplant during the rainy season: Once the seedling is strong enough, move it to a permanent location.
Provide enough space: Star apple trees can grow large, so plant them where they have room to develop.
3. Best Conditions for Growing Star Apple
Climate: Warm, tropical conditions.
Sunlight: A location with plenty of sunshine.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil.
Water: Adequate moisture, especially during the early stages of growth.

4. How Long Does Star Apple Take to Produce Fruits?
The time depends on how the tree is propagated.
Seed-grown tree: It may take approximately 5–10 years or longer to produce fruit.
Grafted tree: It may produce fruit earlier, often within 3–5 years, depending on the variety and growing conditions.

✅ My Recommendation
If you are planting star apple in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria, aim for April to June, when rainfall generally supports seedling establishment. Make sure the planting site drains well, as excessive water around the roots can damage the plant.
